This weekend is your chance to visit a secret garden. Garden Gates Open 2013 presents more than 40 gardens for public viewing: from your neighbour?s prize hosta collection to McKillop Park?s Cancer Survivors Garden. And this peek is free.
?To find all these secret pockets is totally remarkable,? organizer Donna Currie said. ?This is the sixth year and every year is different, every year I meet more cool people. It?s become very big. It celebrates London. No two gardens are the same.?
Rain or shine, the self-guided tour encompasses gardens across the city. Currie said two types of gardeners come out ? those who just want to see what?s out there, and those who take notes and photos to try in their own gardens. Several horticultural societies come from outside the city.
Red Iron Design is a sponsor this year, along with Tourism London. Katie Westervelt, sales and design for the custom metalwork company, said it liked the concept of opening places people don?t normally have a chance to see. Venues also are related to its products. ?One of our most popular items is garden gates,? she said.
Westervelt added her own garden, as well as a client?s, that shows a red iron bridge created by the company. ?I like gardening, which is another reason I wanted to sponsor the event. My own garden is casual and has a whole lot of stuff I?ve collected to put plants in, such as tea pots.?
McKillop Park, at the corner of Wonderland Rd. and Riverside Dr., is home to the Cancer Survivors Garden, created by the Cancer Society, the London Home Builders? Association and a labyrinth by the Sifton Family Foundation. After the yellow daffodils finish in the spring, the garden is a serene place of shrubs and perennials. It includes the river rock foundation from a house that once stood on the property. Visitors can walk the labyrinth.
?It?s the cool public addition to Garden Gates Open this year,? Currie said.
Fanshawe Pioneer Village is back on the tour this year, illustrating some local horticultural heritage.
