DALLAS ? Questions come fast and furious at Big 12 Media Days. It?s the nature of the event, with players being shuttled from one room to the next giving responses to every query.
Iowa State safety Jacques Washington flipped the script.
He brought back out his channel 10 news reporter persona to Big 12 Media Days and grilled those expected to be firing the questions, not answer them.
?I hadn?t been around in a while,? Washington said. ?It needed to come back.?
Washington did his channel 10 news reports at past ISU football events like the team?s media day, where he?ll drag folks in front of the camera and perform interviews and mini-skits with a comedy slant.
At Big 12 Media Days, he interviewed Texas coach Mack Brown, Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops, former Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George and ESPN reporter David Ubben.
Interviewing Brown was the highlight for Washington and his crew, linebacker Jeremiah George and running back Jeff Woody, who also attended the media days.
?He just dropped some knowledge,? Washington said about Brown.
The Cyclones dropped some on Brown as well. They told Brown they considered him a ?smooth operator? because of the way he carries himself.
?I can understand why he gets so many recruits,? George said.
Washington spoke to Stoops about his connections to Iowa and didn?t realize what would happen when he asked Ubben, who was last in Ames in 2010, how long it was since his previous trip.
?I didn?t know the last time he visited,? Washington said. ?I didn?t try to press him, but it seemed that way. It got him a little, so he might visit soon.?
George and Woody could make guest appearances, depending on how the editing of the broadcast turns out. George held the microphone for Washington in some interviews.
Woody and George also took turns interviewing each other. Woody knew the one question to ask that would get a rile out of George: How does it feel to replace linebackers A.J. Klein and Jake Knott?
?He?s been asked that question a thousand times today,? Woody said, ?Kind of cliche asking that, playing up that joke.?
No one on the ISU roster may be better suited to mine comedy gold from any situation than Washington. It?s why Woody considers the senior safety a natural for something like his Cycones.tv bits.
?With someone like Jacques where you just spin the top and let him go,? Woody said. ?You let him talk. He?ll make a funny comment and make you laugh because he is a great guy to have around. A guy like Jacques you just let him go.?
Reporters from the Longhorn Network overheard Washington talking about his channel 10 work. They didn?t believe him at first. He needed to explain what he does and that it wasn?t a joke before they suggested having him do a bit for them when ISU plays Texas.
When they left, he reminded them to look for the broadcast on Cyclones.tv, which he expected to be up within 24 hours.
?It?s a bang,? Washington said. ?It?s a good one.?
