Goal: Thank store owner?s son for helping reunite lost war medals with recipient?s family
Store owner Terrance Berean?s son works at Newburgh?s Antiques and Collectibles Shop in New York. When two young boys found a treasure trove of war medals, the younger Berean agreed to give them to the boys for free if they would find and return them to the soldier?s family. Applaud Mr. Berean for helping to reunite these valuable medals with the recipient?s family.
Located in Wallkill, N.Y., Newburgh?s Antiques and Collectibles Shop is a special place for the Mazzariello boys. Their dad, Michael Mazzariello, takes them there whenever they do well in school. Michael, 11, and Mauro, 8, enjoy searching for military action figures. They hit a collector?s jackpot one day?a purple heart medal, a bronze star medal, and a good conduct award medal. All three medals were awarded to the same soldier, Pfc. Charles George. Approximating their value at $800.00, the store owner?s son made a deal with the boys instead of selling them: the medals were free if they agreed to return them to the soldier?s family.
The two young brothers spent the next seven months investigating veteran?s groups, posting YouTube videos, calling politicians, and searching through internet databases to find the soldier?s living descendants. They finally located the soldier?s family as well as his story. Pfc. Charles George was a Native American soldier killed in 1952 during the Korean War. He was killed in battle when he jumped on a grenade, sacrificing his life so that his troop would be saved. Arriving in North Carolina, the two boys returned the medals to the Cherokee nation, the now rightful owners.
This reunification was all made possible by Mr. Terrance Berean?s son, who gave the Mazzariello boys Pfc. Charles George?s war medals for free in return for their investigative pursuit.
