Zimbabwean journalists face increased intimidation

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) ? An independent Zimbabwean media rights group says journalists face increased intimidation, threats and assaults in their work as elections scheduled next year draw near.

A researcher for the Africa Media Barometer, Chris Mhike, said Friday that Zimbabwean journalists are "treading on dangerous grounds" by writing about President Robert Mugabe, the police, army and other individuals in power. Mhike was speaking at the launch of the barometer, a survey to monitor progress on media freedom which is sponsored by the Media Institute of Southern Africa.

Mhike said the majority of people in Zimbabwe still live in fear which is made worse by draconian laws that allow journalists and citizens to be arrested for the "flimsiest of reasons."

Oxford, November 27, 2012 Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services announces the launch of a new, international, open access journal, Case Studies in Engineering Failure Analysis.

Case Studies in Engineering Failure Analysis provides a forum for the rapid publication of short, structured Case Studies in Engineering Failure Analysis and will form an essential compendium for practitioners in this field. The scope of the journal will include case studies of component failures in mechanical, civil, aerospace, mining, oil and gas, medical, electrical, transportation, power generation, process and forensic engineering, although failure of engineering components in other disciplines will also be considered.

The Editor-in-Chief of the journal, Richard Clegg said of the launch, "Like medical practitioners, most failure analysts use a combination of a deep understanding of science and knowledge of past experience to provide an optimal solution to their challenges. We hope to develop the journal into an indispensible body of experience in engineering failures, which will assist experienced and novice engineering failure analysts to more quickly come to an understanding of the causes of the failures which they are studying."

Dr. George Pantazopoulos from ELKEME Hellenic Research Centre for Metals S.A., Athens, Greece, first author of the first paper submitted and accepted for publication in the journal, said, "The journal focuses on real failure analysis case studies in engineering applications across the industry and as an open access journal it provides a channel for better exchange of failure analysis experience among engineers from all industrial sectors. Rapid publication allows faster sharing of such experience for improved future practice."

Case Studies in Engineering Failure Analysis is the first title in a series of open access journals called 'Case Studies in ' to be launched by Elsevier within the field of engineering. Journals in the series will all follow the article based publishing model which allows for immediate publication of final version of a paper without waiting for other articles to be ready to compile a full issue.

The first articles of Case Studies in Engineering Failure Analysis are available to view online on ScienceDirect.

Tax credit luring pre-Broadway shows to Chicago

CHICAGO (AP) ? The New York-bound musical "Kinky Boots" enjoyed a pre-Broadway run at a downtown Chicago theater this fall, but only after the state of Illinois lured producers with something that's scarce these days ? money.

The Cyndi Lauper and Harvey Fierstein production that's based on a 2005 movie, along with a second musical, "Big Fish," were the first to apply for a certificate making them eligible for a state theater tax credit. Lawmakers slipped it into a package of tax breaks approved late last year for corporate heavyweights Sears Holding Corp. and the CME Group Inc.

The breaks appear to be doing their job: Producers say the credit ? worth up to $500,000 per production or a cap of $2 million per year ? was instrumental in their decision to bring the shows to Chicago instead of going straight to New York or previewing in Seattle, Toronto or San Francisco.

In the highly competitive business of attracting big-name, revenue-generating productions, Chicago theater officials say they're in talks with at least nine other productions.

The timing and principle of such a state tax credit primarily benefitting Chicago ? given in the midst of Illinois' almost unprecedented financial crisis ? has raised some financial experts' eyebrows. Currently, the state is nearly $8 billion behind in paying bills to social service providers and other state contractors; the state's employee pension program is underfunded by $95 billion; and Illinois residents are being asked to pay higher income taxes.

But proponents, who argued for the tax break for five years, now can point to "Kinky Boots" and "Big Fish" as evidence of success. They say the unique tax break brings Chicago something more than money ? a show-business shine that generates buzz. Only Louisiana and Rhode Island have similar legislation, intended to bring shows to cities like New Orleans and Providence.

"From a bigger picture standpoint, it has huge impact to the city and state and that's the real motivation behind this," said Lou Raizin, president of Broadway in Chicago, which runs five theaters. "We're getting a bite of the Big Apple before they do and I love that."

Producers often like to test shows outside of New York before debuting on Broadway. It lets them gauge audience reactions and make updates, improvements and changes. But producers say an out-of-town preview can be pricey. Besides "Kinky Boots," Chicago has had two pre-Broadway shows since 2006 ? "The Pirate Queen" and "The Addams Family," starring Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth.

"Big Fish" producer Dan Jinks said other cities wanted to host his show, but the tax credit made it easier to choose Chicago.

"It's extremely smart of the legislature to realize if a brand new musical is spending all that money in Seattle, why shouldn't they be spending it in Chicago instead?" Jinks said. "To give Chicago that competitive edge is a really smart thing to do."

Gov. Pat Quinn signed the legislation in December 2011, offering tax breaks to productions headed to Broadway within a year and productions that run longer than eight weeks. It applies to theaters anywhere in Illinois that seat more than 1,200 and offers discounts on taxes related to labor and other production costs.

"Kinky Boots" producer Hal Luftig said his entire show costs about $13 million, including between $2.5 million and $3 million to come to Chicago. For him, the $500,000 was a motivator.

"Chicago is a great theater town and being able to have that help and that aid was a big driving force for us to come here," Luftig said.

Nobody doubts the productions will bring the city valuable revenue, not only from the shows' own spending, but also theatergoers shelling out for hotels, restaurants and shopping sprees. But exactly how much is hard to ascertain. Broadway in Chicago officials did not respond to requests for the per-show information, though they said their productions bring a total of $750 million to the city annually.

Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity spokeswoman Sandra Jones said the agency did not have such figures.

Legislative supporters of the measure assured that the bottom line would not be a loss to the state.

"Taxpayers will get their money back," said Illinois Senate President John Cullerton, a Chicago Democrat, who said he would support expanding the tax credit if it is successful. "We're getting money that we otherwise wouldn't get at all. It's outside money. It's why you should do it, because we get more back than we put in."

Some critics, though, find it unwise for Illinois to be giving away any type of tax break while in a financial mess. Ralph Martire, executive director of the Chicago-based Center for Tax and Budget Accountability, said Illinois shouldn't be contemplating tax credits when it has billions of dollars in debt.

"Every penny you use for poor theater decisions is a penny you can't use to educate an inner-city child," he said. "I know it's a relatively small amount of money, but it's absolutely unjust for state government to be kicking that money in that industry this year."

Raizin, with Broadway in Chicago, said the tax credit's impact goes beyond a monetary figure.

"When word starts to really spread nationally and internationally about the great city we have, that's where the huge value is," he said.

Luftig said he's already told his fellow Broadway producers about his "positive experience" in Chicago.

"New York is looking," he said.

Coast Guard ends search for teen swept to sea

By NBC News staff and wire reports

The Coast Guard?called off its search Monday for a teenager who was swept to sea with his parents in northern California over the weekend while trying to rescue the family dog, saying it's not likely the 16-year-old boy could have survived the cold waters.

Officials recovered the bodies of the teen's mother and father Saturday afternoon at Big Lagoon, about 32 miles north of Eureka, Calif., in Humboldt County.?Authorities say the family was trying to rescue their dog from powerful surf, after the?canine?was pulled into the ocean by powerful, 10-foot waves, The Associated Press reported.

The Humboldt County Coroner's office on Monday identified the parents as?Mary Elena Scott, 57, and?Howard Kuljian, 54, of?Freshwater, Calif.?The missing teen was identified as?Gregory Kuljian.

Coast Guard Lt. Bernie Garrigan told the AP the search for the missing boy was stopped Monday, saying that a person without a wetsuit could not survive for long in the frigid surf.

On Saturday,?the teen had gone after the dog, and the father followed him into the water to attempt a rescue,?State Parks District Superintendent Dana Jones told the AP. The 16-year-old was able to get out of the waves, but then went back into the water with his mother to find his father, the AP reported.

"Both were dragged into the ocean," Jones told the AP, noting that the dog got out of the water on its own.

The Coast Guard said the parents'?daughter?reportedly was the one who called 911, The Times-Standard in Eureka reported.

Earlier, the AP reported the Coast Guard tried using a helicopter and two motor life boats to try to find the missing teen, but thick coastal fog had suspended the aerial search.

Officials say the Big Lagoon beach has a steep shoreline where the waves roll in and crash onto the sand, which makes the area dangerous, the AP reported.

The Associated Press contributed to this story.

20 Must-List Business Directories for Every Local Business in the US

Posted on November 26, 2012?
Filed Under Content, Directories, Directory Submission, General, Link Building, Local Listings, Search Engine Optimization

Joe has been running around Manhattan all day between meetings and lunchtime is rolling around. He is just dying for a great burger but doesn?t know the area very well. So he whips out his iPhone and types in ?burger manhattan?. Thankfully you run a gourmet burger caf? nearby and your listing on Yelp comes up first in his search results. He clicks the link, notices you have 4.5 out of 5 stars and almost every review mentions how tasty your burgers are. He checks the address, notices you?re just around the corner and his decision is made. You just got a new, lifelong customer.

That is the power of local business directories.

Local Business Directories

What is a local business directory?

Simply put, it is a website which lists local businesses with a customized page for each of them. Here businesses can offer coupons, special deals, display their contact information, URL, owner?s name and even post media like videos and photos. They are a really convenient way to get information about a business since they?re easy to search, always up to date and trustworthy.

Why are they important?

A search engine?s main goal is to provide highly relevant search results to the searcher for a particular string of keywords. For example, if someone searches for a business name like ?aunt mildred?s cookie factory?, their company website would definitely be one of the results the searcher would like to see.

However, it?s not the only result and the search engines know this.

In recent years Google has increased the rankings of business directory listings for local search terms significantly. In fact, you will notice they often rank right under the company?s official domain. This could be their listing on Google Places, Yelp or SuperPages and is a great way for searchers that aren?t familiar with the business to do a little research.

What are the benefits of being listed?

1. Leads

Directories can be an excellent source of passive referrals and warm leads for your business. Even if your listings only get you one extra customer per day, this can have a dramatic impact on your businesses? growth. Not only is it more income, but it?s a larger word of mouth presence on the street which can help snowball your growth over the course of a year.

2. Ratings

What makes directories so powerful is that the businesses listed on them are rated by previous customers. People share their honest opinions and experiences about their products or services, just like on Amazon. Every business gets a star rating and/or collection of testimonials which can increase the chances of people buying ? if your ratings are good that is. This allows customers to easily rely on the opinions of others instead of going on a gut feeling and hoping for the best. They can make fast, easy decisions and this can be very reassuring.

3. Reputation

Some directories even have a barrier to entry where they will only allow companies that meet certain standards or have specific certifications list with them. This keeps out low value businesses and people will assume you are a solid company if you are accepted. This can be a huge boost for your reputation and goes a long way to build trust upfront.

4. Rankings

Another great reason is that local business directories will increase your rankings for both local as well as ?national? searches. Google Places in particular uses them to increase your relevance for specific local keywords. For example, if someone searches for ?ice cream parlor orange county?, and you happen to have hundreds of directory listings all over the web, chances are you will come up as one of the first results on the searcher?s phone or tablet. This is an ideal way to get more of the local market coming into your store as well as countrywide exposure on regular Google searches with very little effort.

The top 20 business directories

If you are currently listed with only 1 or 2 local business directories you are missing out on quite a few opportunities to get found online. Here are the top, most relevant directories ranked according to the amount of traffic they receive, from largest to smallest. Sign up to all of them and you will be exposed to more than 90% of the total business directory traffic in the US:

  1. Google Places for Business
  2. Facebook
  3. LinkedIn
  4. Yellowpages
  5. Insiderpages
  6. Bing Business Portal
  7. Manta
  8. HotFrog
  9. Supermedia
  10. Express Update USA
  11. CitySearch
  12. MojoPages
  13. Business.com
  14. Citysquares
  15. Citydata
  16. Yahoo Local
  17. Chamberofcommerce.com
  18. YellowBot
  19. Kudzu
  20. Ziplocal

Getting listed in each directory can be time consuming though and you could consider using our?Local Directory Listing service to have your company details listed in each of these directories. Local business directories have become an indispensable part of any business? internet presence. They are a quick and easy win so sign up, boost your lead generation, get more customers and increase turnover right away.

Saudi Grand Mufti warns Gulf public against unrest

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia's Grand Mufti, the highest religious authority in the birthplace of Islam, issued a condemnation of demonstrations that appeared to blame Iran for unrest among Shi'ite Muslims in Gulf Arab states.

"The Arab Gulf is being targeted by attacks seeking to discredit religion and eliminate the material interests and wealth it holds," Al-Watan newspaper quoted Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah Al al-Sheikh as saying in his Friday sermon in Riyadh.

Al-Sheikh warned people not to follow "enemies" who called on them to protest, saying they aimed to divide the people of the region.

Unrest has erupted among majority Shi'ites in Bahrain and minority Shi'ites in Eastern Saudi Arabia in the last two years. Sunni authorities have repeatedly blamed Shi'ite Iran, which denies involvement.

Tension has also run high over Iran's disputed nuclear program, which Gulf Arab rulers fear could help Iran acquire nuclear weapons.

The al-Saud dynasty rules in alliance with clerics who back the royal family and have wide influence over Saudi society.

Al-Watan said al-Sheikh also lashed out at what he called "satellite channels that broadcast evil" and urged owners to use them to promote security and obey their country's rulers.

Emboldened by rapid growth in e-commerce shipping, the cash-strapped U.S. Postal Service is moving aggressively this holiday season to start a premium service for the Internet shopper seeking the instant gratification of a store purchase: same-day package delivery.

Teaming up with major retailers, the?post?office?will begin the expedited service in San Francisco on Dec. 12 at a price similar to its competitors. If things run smoothly, the program will quickly expand next year to other big cities such as Boston, Chicago and New York. It follows similar efforts by eBay, Amazon.com, and most recently Wal-Mart Stores Inc., which charges a $10 flat rate for same-day delivery.

The delivery program, called Metro?Post, seeks to build on the?post?office's?double-digit growth in package volume to help offset steady declines in first-class and standard mail. Operating as a limited experiment for the next year, it is projected to generate between $10 million and $50 million in new revenue from deliveries in San Francisco alone, according to postal regulatory filings, or up to $500 million, if expanded to 10 cities.

The filings do not reveal the mail agency's anticipated expenses to implement same-day service, which can only work profitably if retailers have enough merchandise in stores and warehouses to be quickly delivered to nearby residences in a dense urban area. The projected $500 million in potential revenue, even if fully realized, would represent just fraction of the record $15.9 billion annual loss that the Postal Service reported last week.

But while startups in the late 1990s such as Kozmo.com notably failed after promising instant delivery, the Postal Service's vast network serving every U.S. home could put it in a good position to be viable over the long term. The retail market has been rapidly shifting to Internet shopping, especially among younger adults, and more people are moving from suburb to city, where driving to a store can be less convenient.

Postal?officials, in interviews with The Associated Press, cast the new offering as "exciting" and potentially "revolutionary." Analysts are apt to agree at least in part, if kinks can be worked out.

"There is definitely consumer demand for same-day delivery, at the right price," said Matt Nemer, a senior analyst at Wells Fargo Securities in San Francisco. "The culture in retail traditionally has been to get a customer into the store, with the immediacy of enjoying a purchase being the main draw. So same-day delivery could be huge for online retailers. The question is whether the economics can work."

He and others said that consumers are a fickle lot when it comes to shipping, seeking fast delivery, but also sensitive to its pricing. Many will order online and pick up merchandise at a store if it avoids shipping charges, or will agree to pay a yearly fee of $79 for a service such as Amazon Prime to get unlimited, free two-day delivery or even purchase a higher-priced item if it comes with "free" shipping.

"Customers do like same-day delivery when it gets very close to a holiday or it otherwise becomes too late to shop," said Jim Corridore, analyst with S&P Capital IQ, which tracks the shipping industry. "But while the Postal Service has the ability to deliver to any address, they are not always known for their speed. To increase their speed might prove to be a much more complex offering than they're thinking about."

As the Postal Service launches Metro?Post?and sets pricing, its target consumer is likely to include busy professionals such as Victoria Kuohung, 43. A dermatologist and mother of three young children, Kuohung for years has gone online for virtually all her family's needs, including facial cleansers, books, clothing, toys, diapers and cookware.

Kuohung lives in a downtown Boston high-rise apartment with her husband, who often travels out of town for work. The couple says they would welcome having more retailers offer same-day delivery as an option. Still, at an estimated $10 price, Kuohung acknowledges that she would likely opt to wait an extra day or two for delivery, unless her purchase were a higher-priced electronics gadget or a special toy or gift for her son's birthday.

"I prefer not to spend my time driving in a car, fighting for parking, worrying about the kids, dealing with traffic and battling crowds for a limited selection in stores," said Kuohung, as her 1-year-old-twins and 4-year-old son squealed in the background. "But right now Amazon delivers in two days since I'm a member of Prime, so it would have to be something I can't get at the corner CVS or the grocery store down the street."

Under the plan, the Postal Service is working out agreements with at least eight and as many as 10 national retail chains for same-day delivery. The mail agency says nondisclosure agreements don't allow it to reveal the companies. But given the somewhat limited pool of large-scale retailers ? they must have a physical presence in 10 or more big U.S. cities to be a postal partner ? the list is expected to include department stores, sellers of general merchandise, clothiers, even perhaps a major e-commerce company or two.

Consumers will have until 2 or 3 p.m. to place an online order with a participating retailer, clicking the box that says "same-day delivery" and making the payment. Postal workers then pick up the merchandise from nearby retail stores or warehouses for delivery to homes between 4 and 8 p.m. that day. In San Francisco, the?post?office?will closely track work hours and travel, which could quickly add to costs depending on traffic, total package volume or the proximity of merchandise in a delivery area.

"We're trying to revolutionize shipping; we're not simply trying to get a niche market of consumers," said Gary Reblin, the Postal Service's vice president for domestic products. He believes people of varying ages and income levels ? young adults who don't own cars, older Americans who are less mobile ? will welcome avoiding costly or time-consuming trips to the store.

By targeting big partners, Reblin said, the?post?office?eventually hopes to push pricing down by making same-day delivery a standard option on retail web sites.

The new same-day offering is part of the?post?office's?blossoming shipping and packaging business. That sector was one bright spot in the mail agency's dismal 2012 financial report, which showed a loss of $15.9 billion and forecast more red ink next year

This holiday season, the?post?office?expects a 20 percent jump in its package volume, higher than its shipping rivals.

Gas explosion levels building, injures 18 in Springfield, Massachusetts

(Reuters) - An explosion triggered by a gas leak destroyed a strip club in downtown Springfield, Massachusetts, on Friday, injuring 18 people, although none seriously, authorities said.

Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno said the building, a Scores Gentlemen's Club, exploded at about 5:25 p.m. as gas company workers, police officers and firefighters were responding to a leak in the area.

The 18 injured people included nine firefighters, four Columbia Gas of Massachusetts employees and two police officers, Sarno said.

"Through God's mercy, we are not aware of any fatalities," Sarno told reporters, adding none of the victims suffered life-threatening injuries.

The club had been evacuated before the explosion due to the gas leak, which may have saved the lives of patrons and employees who had been inside, said Thomas Walsh, a spokesman for the city.

Images on a local CBS affiliate showed buildings with shattered windows, debris scattered in the street, and emergency services entering the area.

Witnesses described to local media a massive explosion that shook the ground and produced a huge cloud of smoke. The explosion was powerful enough to be felt in neighboring towns, Sarno told reporters.

At least 15 to 20 buildings in Springfield's downtown section sustained extensive damage in the blast, including a six-story residential building where a number of units have been condemned due to damage from the explosion, Walsh said.

The city established an emergency shelter to accommodate residents displaced by the blast, Sarno said.

Officials said state and local investigators were trying to determine the cause of the gas leak and subsequent explosion.

Last year, Springfield was hit with a tornado that cut a path several blocks wide, ripping apart trees and damaging buildings. Springfield has a population of about 150,000 people.

New test may improve cervical cancer detection

ScienceDaily (Nov. 23, 2012) ? Routine smear tests have considerably reduced the number of cases of cervical cancer, but despite intensive screening 250 women in Sweden still die from the disease every year. Researchers at Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Sweden, have developed new methods of minimising the number of missed cases and making diagnosis more reliable.

Since the introduction of organised screening in Sweden in the 1960s, the number of women being diagnosed with and succumbing to cervical cancer has fallen dramatically. Screening, where a sample of cells is collected from the cervix and examined under an optical microscope, detects early cell changes so that they can be treated before they cause cancer.

However, despite intensive screening 250 women still die from cervical cancer each year in Sweden, and a further 500 develop the disease.

The sensitivity of the current test is low, which means that cell samples must be taken at least every three years. A large number of tests must also be repeated because of unreliable results -- something which causes anxiety among patients and additional costs for the health service.

Researchers at Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg have now developed a complementary test capable of minimising the number of missed cancer cases.

"Around 70 per cent of all cervical cancer cases are caused by two specific virus types, known as HPV16 and HPV18. We have developed a method that identifies proteins of these oncogenic viruses in cells, enabling a more objective interpretation of the test results," explains Maria Lidqvist, a doctoral student, who presents the method in her thesis.

"This method can hopefully produce a more reliable diagnosis in uncertain cases and reduce the number of missed cancer cases, as well as the number of women who have to be re-called because of cell samples that are difficult to interpret."

The research behind this method has been financed by the Swedish Research Council and conducted at Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, in collaboration with Fujirebio Diagnostics AB in Gothenburg.

Financial infidelity - Winnipeg Free Press

Despite a six-figure family income, these parents of two young children have virtually no savings. Larry has no work pension and Cheryl only recently enrolled in hers.

MIKE DEAL / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS Enlarge Image

Despite a six-figure family income, these parents of two young children have virtually no savings. Larry has no work pension and Cheryl only recently enrolled in hers.

Cheryl and Larry are seeing red.

But they're not angry so much as they're frustrated, anxious and a little perplexed about how they could be racking up debt after all they've been through over the past few years.

Larry's, Cheryl's finances

INCOME:

Larry: $81,619 ($5,395 net a month)

Cheryl: $38,000 ($2,202 net a month)

MONTHLY EXPENSES: $3,936

DEBTS:

Car loan: $12,000 owing at zero interest

Mortgage: $50,000 owing; 5.15 per cent fixed rate

Larry credit cards: $6,600, 19.99 per cent

Cheryl credit card: $1,000; 19.99 per cent

ASSETS:

Home: $193,000

Cheryl Group RRSP: $3,468

RESP: $1,039

NET WORTH: $117,907

"We are both trying to re-establish our credit after finishing a consumer proposal in the last year," says Cheryl, 41.

"We owned a small business and incurred a lot of debt while running it."

The couple, who both work in sales, grossed almost $120,000 combined last year or about $7,757 in take home pay a month.

Despite the six-figure family income, the parents of two young children have virtually no savings. Larry has no work pension and Cheryl only recently enrolled in hers.

Yet they have racked up their credit cards to the tune of $6,600, and they've done so only in the last six months after individually applying for credit without telling each other.

Although they have little other debt -- they owe $50,000 on the house and have a car loan -- balancing their household budget is an elusive goal.

In the past, Cheryl has largely left managing the finances to Larry, but she now realizes she will have to play a bigger role.

"Larry doesn't know where his stuff is half the time and he's very laissez-faire about money," she says.

"Considering we just paid off the consumer proposal, really scrimping and saving in, we were hoping to get a little breathing room, but it seems our situation hasn't improved at all."

Debt counsellor Christi Posner says, on paper, this couple should be in good shape financially because their income far exceeds their expenses. Yet they are still struggling.

"What this tells me is that there is a deeper issue here," says Posner, with the non-profit agency Credit Counselling Society.

"Debt is merely the symptom of a larger underlying problem."

At the heart of their problem is poor communication. One hand doesn't know what the other is doing.

"The two of them have kept separate bank accounts, and secret credit cards have been applied for and used," she says. "Secrets about spending, saving and debt get in the way of open and honest communication and can be detrimental to personal relationships; this is called financial infidelity."

And it can be very destructive to a family's well being -- both financially and emotionally. Fortunately, Larry and Cheryl are not deeply in debt, and they have overcome a major financial setback -- the failure of a business.

Posner says the prescription to their problem is straightforward. They need to talk regularly about finances.

"They should start with something routine, such as how to better utilize Cheryl's free bank accounts to organize household bill payments, or how to set limits on spending," she says.

Of course, sitting down to discuss finances can be an uncomfortable experience at first because it can lead to conflict. But this is natural and even productive because they will learn where they both stand regarding saving, spending and their future.

It's all about values, Posner says.

"Simply put, values are about what's important to us," she says. "If Larry and Cheryl argue about money, the real issue they're arguing about may be much deeper and harder to see."

?

Values are built on past and present experiences and relate to our education, upbringing, culture, age, gender, work experience and even health.

"When it comes to our finances, we tend to spend money on things we value."

For example, someone who values security usually saves and avoids debt. But another person may value excitement and freedom, and spending money is a way to express that.

In a relationship, people with different values can still get along quite well, but they need to be open about their differences.

Once Larry and Cheryl are talking, they can begin focusing on the numbers, and a good place to start is their expenses. Posner says this is a red flag in their situation because they're obviously underestimating their costs.

"The list of expenses submitted by Larry and Cheryl total $3,936 a month," she says. "That means that there is over $3,600 that is unaccounted for every month."

Their budget, however, seems to be missing a number of important costs, such as gasoline, car repairs, clothing, entertainment, gifts and hair care.

"After adding in averages for those and other categories, I estimate their expenses are likely closer to $5,866, but that still leaves over $1,700 unaccounted for monthly."

For the next couple of months, they need to track their spending, aiming to reduce discretionary costs between five and 10 per cent.

Posner says one particular area where they likely can trim expenses is ATM withdrawals.

"Over a 30-day period, there were $1,600 in ATM withdrawals from Larry's account, which will be very hard to trace back," she says. "I recommend limiting any cash withdrawals unless they are living on an all cash system and tracking each penny."

Once they get a handle on where the money is going, they can start focusing on the future. This involves building a budget they can live with that incorporates paying the bills, having a little fun, saving for the future and eliminating their debt.

They certainly earn enough money to address all goals, but their short-term focus should be eliminating the credit card debt. Allowing high interest debt to linger is an enormous waste of their money.

"By making minimum payments only, it will take Larry and Cheryl over 50 years to repay their credit card," Posner says.

And they have no reason to be making only the minimum payments. The couple should easily be able to come up with a plan to pay off the cards in six months -- paying about $635 in interest -- while still working toward their other financial goals.

And among those goals should be setting money aside for emergencies, which is just as important as saving for college and retirement.

"Larry's income fluctuates from month to month, so it is essential they put money aside when he earns extra income to help out when he earns less income," she says.

Once they're on track, building up a 'just-in-case' reserve to cover six months of expenses, then they can start thinking about saving more for the long-term.

And Larry and Cheryl have lots to think about. Their future is promising, Posner says.

They just need to talk regularly and honestly about their finances.

"It's all about working together as a team toward the same goal."

Americans to mark holiday with family, festivities

NEW YORK (AP) ? Airports, train stations and highways were expected to remain busy Thursday as people made their way home to reconnect with family and friends for Thanksgiving ? though some reunions might be bittersweet because of the damage and displacement caused by Superstorm Sandy.

For some, the once-sacrosanct harvest feast now starts the holiday shopping season ? and store openings keep getting earlier. Black Friday now starts on Thanksgiving Day itself at many national stores, and some shoppers planned to race from their dinner tables to line up for bargains, delaying their second helpings until they've purchased the latest toys or electronic devices.

The popular Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, attended by more than 3 million people and watched by 50 million on TV, was scheduled to kick off in New York City. This year, the giant balloons would include Elf on a Shelf and Papa Smurf. A new version of Hello Kitty was to be included, while Buzz Lightyear, Sailor Mickey Mouse and the Pillsbury Doughboy remained in the lineup. Real life stars were to include Carly Rae Jepsen and Rachel Crow of "The X Factor."

Other cities planned to have showy marching bands, cartoon character balloons and musical extravaganzas, as well. Chicago, Philadelphia and Detroit were among the big cities hosting parades.

Among the scheduled highlights were a Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey spectacular in Chicago; Phillies star Ryan Howard and Miss America 2012 Laura Kaeppeler in Philadelphia; and a group of 2012 U.S. Olympic champions in Detroit.

The holiday came as portions of the Northeast still were reeling from Sandy's havoc, and volunteers planned to serve thousands of turkey dinners to people it left homeless or struggling.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said his office would coordinate the distribution of 26,500 meals at 30 sites in neighborhoods affected by Sandy, and other organizations also were pitching in.

The Long Beach Surf Association and a charity called Surf for All were sponsoring a Thanksgiving dinner in the Long Island community of Long Beach.

U.S. Rep. Gregory Meeks, whose New York district includes the heavily battered Rockaways neighborhoods, said he planned to stop by Thanksgiving dinners at three churches and a school.

"They are still giving thanks," Meeks said of his constituents. "They are thankful that they're alive and thankful to the people who are coming to help them."

Some used social media to coordinate Thanksgiving volunteering. Elle Aichele, of Toms River, N.J., started a Facebook page called Hurricane Sandy Thanksgiving Adopt a Family for Dinner.

"Please host a family that needs something to be thankful for this Thanksgiving!" she wrote. "I have been thinking about what I can do to help and this is it!"

For some travelers, the need to stretch their money dictated how they were to arrive at their destinations.

Ashlee Denaro, 35, of Irvine, Calif., was at Los Angeles International Airport Wednesday with her three children. The divorced woman had flown to Salt Lake City to pick up the children from her ex-spouse for a flight back to Southern California.

To economize, Denaro, a physical therapist, flew to Phoenix, changed planes for Salt Lake City, then returned to LAX instead of landing at her local Orange County airport. She then planned to drive an hour to Irvine.

The circuitous route saved her $500 on plane fare.

A Pennsylvania Turnpike service plaza just outside Pittsburgh was packed early Wednesday afternoon, with occasional lines of cars waiting for gas.

Linda Lapp-Stout, 64, was traveling from Cleveland to see family in Parkesburg, between Philadelphia and Lancaster. Lapp-Stout, who has driven a school bus for 32 years, said she was thankful for the holiday break and the warm weather, but she was worried about the economy.

"It's hard to even afford gas," she said.

Landscape designer Anne Murphy, of Gorham, Maine, was waiting for an Amtrak train at Boston's South Station as she and her husband, Ken, headed for Thanksgiving dinner in Gibbsboro, N.J. She said she travels smarter by searching for deals online, using cheaper airports farther from home and packing fewer bags to avoid baggage fees.

"I think we probably travel a little bit less because of costs, but we've definitely traveled more public transportation in order to save on gas," said Murphy, 56.

"Lincoln" Women: How Sally Field and Gloria Reuben Stole Daniel Day-Lewis' Show

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" is, on the face of it, a standard "great man" biopic. Basked in a honeydew light, overflowing with sage advice, Daniel Day-Lewis' Great Emancipator is depicted as constantly and self-consciously speaking to the ages well before he belongs to them.

But let us now praise the film's not-as-famous women. For what rescues "Lincoln" from bombast are the slier and subtler performances by a trio of fantastic and often under-utilized actresses - Sally Field, Gloria Reuben and S. Epatha Merkerson.

Each one uses her limited screen time to etch a devastating portrait of the limitations that faced women in a male-dominated society. After all, if the legislators debating the merits of the 13th Amendment in the movie fret openly that abolishing slavery will begin a slippery slope to black enfranchisement, they seem even more horrified at the prospect that it one day might lead to granting women the right to vote.

Though some critics have griped about Spielberg's penchant for speechifying in "Lincoln," there has been near universal praise for Day-Lewis and for Tommy Lee Jones' work as the wily Thaddeus Stevens. Field's take on First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln - a woman Louis C.K. quipped on "Saturday Night Live" recently was "historically insane" - has been more divisive.

In TheWrap, for instance, Steve Pond wrote, "Sally Field may well be nominated for Supporting Actress for her Mary Todd Lincoln, but to me her hysteria was one of the least-successful parts of the film."

Yet Field's work is in many ways more revelatory than that of Day-Lewis. True, the Irish-Anglo acting god daringly gives the 16th president a historically accurate high voice and indelibly paints a picture of a great orator with an outhouse sense of humor, but his modifications are slight tweaks to the Lincoln myth. Field's interpretation is a whole-scale reinvention.

Field's Mary is privately unhinged, true. But she is also a smooth Washington operator, comfortable sparring with Stevens over her White House redecorating and forcibly pressuring her husband to carry the 13th Amendment to the finish line while wielding little more than a fan.

Even her mania is rooted in the death of her young son Willy; an empathetic anchor that keeps Mary from becoming simply the backwoods, social-climbing hysteric she's been portrayed as in the past.

In screenwriter Tony Kushner, Field finds an eager co-conspirator. As Kushner confessed on NPR, the Lincolns had a turbulent relationship in part because of Abraham Lincoln's emotional coldness.

"People always think about Mary as being difficult and she absolutely was, but Lincoln wasn't easy either," Kushner said. "He was remote and complicated and rather interestingly fond of telling her things that would upset her horribly, like these dreams that he kept having and he would leave her kind of in a state night after night, telling her that he was having these kind of scary dreams.

It's an enormously complicated relationship and the family is a tragic family."

The only false note in an otherwise galvanizing portrayal, is having Mary deliver a line that is a too historically self-aware.

"All anyone will remember about me was that I was crazy and ruined your happiness," Mary says at one point - to which my companion let forth a large guffaw.

Field who packed 25 pounds onto her slender frame and allowed the camera to scan her creased face is a revelation - it's a reminder that the plucky star of "Norma Rae" is good for more than Boniva ads.

But Mary Todd Lincoln isn't the only female who elbows her way into this big screen men's club. Gloria Reuben's Elizabeth Keckley is also a marvel.

Dramaturgically it's a thankless role with Reuben's freed slave seamstress frequently used as a stand-in for all-antebellum African American suffering. Yet Reuben grounds the performance in a simmering fury and heartbreak, using her eyes to register the peigns of hurt that greets the racist slights Keckley is exposed to on a daily basis.

Her conversation in the White House portico with Daniel Day-Lewis about the meaning of emancipation is a bravura moment - a reminder of just how long a walk to freedom 19th century blacks faced.

Likewise, S. Epatha Merkerson's Lydia Smith is perhaps the greatest master class in doing a lot with a little since Judi Dench captured a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1998 for her eight-minute cameo in "Shakespeare in Love."

Smith, the housekeeper and (spoiler alert) common-law wife of Thaddeus Stevens, has two fleeting scenes. In one, she gently removes Jones' coat as he enters their Washington, D.C., home after the amendment passes, in the other she reads the constitutional addition aloud in bed to her secret-paramour. It is, in the words of another Kushner play, a reminder that "the world only spins forward."

Indeed, the entire film represents a major step forward for Spielberg whose earlier boy's adventures were largely all-male affairs. Aside from Embeth Davidtz's frightened maid in "Schindler's List," Whoopi Goldberg's martyr-like Celie in "The Color Purple" and Karen Allen's fiery adventurer in "Raiders of the Lost Ark," the Spielberg women are a weightless bunch. Even great actresses like Julianne Moore in "The Lost World" are given gossamer thin screen time.

Here, transported by Kushner's words, he allows these women to step forward out of the shadows and into history. Next time maybe he'll let them take center stage.
